The nightmare under the Christmas tree

A Santa Claus who brings presents? Not in Ronneburg! There, the festive evening turned into a real crime story for one family. Enrico S. (47), dressed as Santa Claus, did not bring Christmas cheer, but instead took the hostess's wallet. 600 euros in cash and all her papers – simply gone. Incidentally, this "service" also cost 100 euros – booked on the Internet.

What sounds like a bizarre sketch has now become serious: the case ended up in Gera District Court. However, the defendant was once again conspicuous by his absence.

Santa Claus with a criminal record and excuses

Back in September, Enrico S. had already delayed a trial by appealing against a penalty order—and he didn't show up then either. Now, in December, it's the same story all over again: instead of turning himself in, S. claimed to be ill—but where was his doctor's note? Nowhere to be found.

But it gets even stranger: the wannabe Santa even filed a criminal complaint against the Thuringian judiciary! He claims to feel "physically and emotionally hurt" by the charges, and alleges that the judge, the prosecutor, and the entire Free State of Thuringia are responsible.

The court's response was brief and clear: appeal rejected – penalty remains in place.

The penalty: 1,750 euros plus 600 euros in compensation for lost value.

The verdict is clear: a fine of €1,750, divided into 70 daily rates of €25 each. In addition, the damage incurred is to be compensated by confiscating €600 in compensation for the loss of value. Will the defrauded hostess ever see this money? It's doubtful. Because the man in the red coat seems to be at odds with reality – and with the justice system as well.

Will S. still appeal? It's unclear. His communication strategy: silence. A press inquiry remained unanswered.

And what can we learn from this?

When even Santa Claus becomes a thief, nothing is sacred anymore. This case shows how little control there currently is when it comes to online bookings for "Santas." No checks, no proof, no security. Clear rules are needed—and perhaps a few legal reindeer to take such cases directly to court.

Because when someone in a red coat gains access to your home and then steals from you, it's not just brazen—it's dangerous. And that's exactly where the rule of law starts to take a serious interest. A thief in disguise is still a thief—with or without bells.

What do we think about this? Honestly, a verdict is good, but an actual court appearance would have been better. If you can steal, you can also take responsibility—right?
