Car rental company collects money 41 times - How a family man slipped into the financial abyss
Furniture transportation with consequences: From delivery van to cost trap
What was planned as an uncomplicated furniture move turned into a financial nightmare for Viennese family man Alpaslan: instead of around 200 euros in rental costs, money was debited from his account 41 times in one day - a total of 2,400 euros! The reason: a barely comprehensible sequence of alleged rule violations and automated processes in the landlord's booking system.
Shortly after taking over the rented Ford Transit Custom, the first text messages arrived: driving too fast, smoking in the vehicle, allegedly incorrect behavior - each time directly linked to an automatic debit. Alpaslan could no longer even react. "At some point, I was just glad that I didn't have any more money in my account - because they couldn't debit me any more," he tells Heute newspaper.
Rental contract with side effects: Breakdown, blockade, contractual penalty
But that was not enough. Shortly after crossing the border into another country, the vehicle broke down. Help from the rental company? Not a chance. Alpaslan had to pay the towing costs himself. Back in Vienna, he tried to return the vehicle - but the car would not start. The provider had apparently remotely blocked the van.
And so the fee clock has been ticking ever since. The original 200 euros became 2,400 - and every hour counts. To top off the madness, the company announced that it would collect the car - but only after payment of a high contractual penalty.
Not an isolated case: rip-offs on vacation too
Car rental rip-offs are not a new phenomenon - especially abroad, there are regular cases that seem like satire. Lukas Kiesewetter, a vacationer from Leipzig, reports on a case in Mallorca that seems even more brazen: After arriving at the rental car counter, the company suddenly demanded over 8,600 euros - including a 3,500 euro excess, a 1,400 euro deposit and, on top of that, a 217 euro fuel charge. The alternative: 220 euros in cash - immediately. If you don't defend yourself or allow yourself to be intimidated, you pay.
Rental agreement or digital robber barony?
What happened here no longer has much to do with business - it's a rip-off under the guise of contract law. Of course car rental companies are allowed to sanction violations - but 41 individual bookings within a few hours? That's not a contract, that's an algorithm with overreaching tendencies.
Such cases show: Many car rental companies, especially in the low-cost segment, deliberately rely on digital arbitrariness, non-transparent contract clauses and fear. Those without legal protection quickly find themselves with their backs to the wall - like Alpaslan. The man only wanted to transport furniture - now he can barely pay his electricity bill.
Such methods should be immediately regulated by law and legally scrutinized. There needs to be clear limits for digital direct debit systems, transparent contractual conditions and a protection mechanism for consumers before they are financially ruined. After all, one click must not cost you your livelihood.
