A letter, a sketch and a legal dispute worth billions

Donald Trump is once again firmly in the headlines - but this time not because of his election campaign or judicial appointment, but because of an explosive nude sketch. To be more precise: because of a report by the renowned Wall Street Journal, which claims that Trump sent a juicy letter to the now deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in 2003 - including a sketch of a naked woman.

The accusation: Trump had closer ties to Epstein than previously known - despite his public distancing. The former US president denies everything and goes on the counterattack: with a lawsuit for at least ten billion dollars in damages.

Smear or revelation? What really bothers Trump

In the lawsuit filed, Trump describes the article as "defamatory" and "fictitious". The authors of the report had deliberately targeted his "integrity and reputation". Rupert Murdoch, the media giant behind the WSJ, is also on the list of defendants.

Trump's lawyers claim there is no evidence that the letter is genuine - and Trump himself speaks of an "absurd forgery". The WSJ, on the other hand, remains steadfast, referring to journalistic diligence and intends to "vigorously defend" itself.

The Epstein shadow is getting longer - also for Trump

What is explosive is that the case comes at a sensitive time. The Epstein scandal is following Trump around like an annoying shadow - and is also causing resentment in his own camp. Many conservatives are disappointed: Trump had promised to create transparency in the Epstein case - but little has happened so far.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump attempted to counter this: he had asked Justice Minister Pam Bondi to publish certain court documents - as a sign of openness. But the suspicion remains: Is Trump really reacting out of principle, or just because the allegations suddenly concern him?

Media dispute with show effect

Welcome to the trillion dollar theater! The fact that Trump goes to extremes when it comes to his reputation is nothing new. But a lawsuit for ten billion dollars - over an article and a sketch - shows once again: in the USA, law is often also tactics.

Whether the letter is genuine or not is of secondary importance to many. What remains is the impression: Trump avoids clarification of the content and prefers to present himself as a victim of the media. A pattern that we know well enough - and that unfortunately works time and time again.

Real clarification would be more important than ever in the Epstein case. But instead: Billion-dollar lawsuits, press wars and personal scandals. And in the end? Perhaps the search is on again for a scapegoat instead of taking real responsibility.
