Why hand luggage is suddenly expensive

Flights with low-cost airlines are usually unbeatably cheap - but woe betide you if you want to take more than just the smallest bag with you! For years, airlines such as Ryanair, Vueling and EasyJet have been charging extra fees for hand luggage. What initially seemed like a clever move by the airlines to keep ticket prices low has now become a problem. In addition to the fees for hand luggage, the consumer protection organization also criticized surcharges for reserving a seat for a person accompanying a child or a person with a disability, as well as for printing out the boarding pass at the airport and for cash payments at the counter. The Spanish consumer protection organization Facua therefore filed a complaint against the airlines at the end of May.nullThe Spanish government has now fined the airlines millions for violating consumer rights with these fees.

The penalties: a historic blow to the airlines

The sum is huge: the low-cost airline industry in Spain has to pay a total of 179 million euros in fines, and Ryanair is the main victim with 107 million euros. In addition to Ryanair, the low-cost airlines Vueling, Easyjet, Norwegian and Volotea are also affected by the fines. The Ministry of Consumer Protection in Madrid has ruled that it is illegal to add "extras" to the already low ticket prices. However, the airlines can still go to court and take legal action against the decision. But why is the whole thing so problematic? The airlines have not only violated Spanish law with their tricks, but have also massively impaired transparency for customers. In addition, the airlines can still go to court and take legal action against the decision. Ryanair has already announced that it will take legal action against the fine imposed.

What this means for consumers

Consumer advocates are celebrating the decision as a great success. At last, travelers who have paid too much for hand luggage can claim their money back. And the airlines? Not only are they faced with high fines, they also have to stop the questionable practices. Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary is particularly outraged by the decision - he criticized "illegal and unfounded fines". The ministry had imposed them for "political reasons" and violated European law.

Conclusion

The penalties against Ryanair and Co. are a clear step in the right direction. But the question remains: why does it take so long for such practices to be noticed? Consumers have long since seen through the fact that low-cost airlines are out to make additional profits by charging supposedly unlawful additional fees. It is time for similar legal investigations to be carried out in other countries such as Germany to clarify whether airlines are actually acting illegally. Perhaps airlines should also make dynamic ticket pricing - a system where airlines adjust prices in real time based on factors such as demand, time of booking, competition and remaining capacity to maximize revenue and optimize load factors - transparent. This strengthens the trust between provider and passenger.
