One joke too many: German comedian causes scandal in Nuuk

What happens when you try to mix humor with global politics—and end up offending an entire country? This question is currently being asked following an incident in Greenland involving German comedian Maxi Schafroth. The website t-online reports on the case.

In Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, Schafroth apparently wanted to stage a particularly "funny" moment for the NDR satire show Extra 3: He tried to raise a US flag in front of the local cultural center—supposedly on behalf of the American government. In doing so, he was likely alluding to Donald Trump's old fantasy of "buying" Greenland for the US.

The reaction of those present? Anything but enthusiastic. Employees of the cultural center immediately intervened and prevented the action. The scene was filmed by an activist, who later commented on it with harsh words: "If you don't respect our values, why are you in Nuuk?! Shame on you, you fool!"

Between satire and bad timing

The incident was not an isolated case. Just one day earlier, Schafroth had caused confusion at Nuuk Airport: according to eyewitnesses, he announced in English that Donald Trump had landed and that the Greenlanders were cheering him on. However, the applause was for a returning futsal team—a Greenlandic indoor soccer team that had just returned from Croatia. Was it meant to be funny? Perhaps. In any case, it didn't work.

The NDR has since confirmed the incident and refers to it as a satirical stunt in which "a member of the team pretended to want to raise a US flag in a public place." This resulted in a fine being issued on the spot. And a clear statement afterwards: "The editorial team expresses its regret to the people of Greenland if this impression was given."

Satire as an export problem?

The idea of staging satire in real locations is not new—but it doesn't work the same everywhere. In Greenland, where relations with the US are already a sensitive issue, a man waving a US flag and shouting Trump slogans is not automatically recognized as a comedian—but possibly as a real threat or provocation.

According to an eyewitness, Schafroth only realized the seriousness of the situation when it was already too late: "He got scared when he saw how strong the headwind was." No wonder he quickly stopped filming.

Comment: Satire is not a one-way street

Funny is what provokes – this phrase is often considered a free pass on German television. But when filming abroad, you have to think more than you laugh. Hoisting a US flag in Greenland and pretending to be an American government official is not only courageous, but also quite blind to the cultural context. And this is exactly where the punchline falls flat.
Perhaps it would sometimes be better not to play the "Trump" card – but simply to keep your mouth shut.
