Court in the Spotlight: Witness Exposed by Smart Glasses – Testimony Completely Discredited

A sensational incident has rocked a London court: in the middle of an ongoing trial, a witness is suspected of not formulating his own testimony. Instead, he is alleged to have received instructions in real time via smart glasses. What initially sounds like mere speculation quickly escalates into a full-blown scandal—with clear consequences. The Golem portal reports, citing the British portal legalfutures.
Strange delays are raising suspicions
Right from the start of the questioning, the witness stood out for his unusually long pauses. Each answer was delayed, almost as if he were waiting for a signal. At first, this had no consequences, but as the questioning continued, these oddities became more frequent.
The situation changed abruptly when disruptive noises were suddenly heard in the courtroom. The defense attorney reacted immediately and voiced a specific suspicion: Could the witness be using technical assistance? She asked him to remove his glasses—and with good reason, since modern smart glasses can transmit information in real time.
According to Golem, the judge later stated:
“These questions were translated, and then there was a pause before an answer was given. After a few questions, [defense attorney] Sarah Walker told me that she could hear background noise coming from Mr. Jakštys’s vicinity and asked if Mr. Jakštys could briefly remove his glasses, as she was aware that he was wearing smart glasses.”
Technology gives the plan away
What happened next left little room for doubt. During the questioning, the smart glasses apparently lost connection to the smartphone—and suddenly a stranger’s voice could be heard clearly. It was then clear that this was more than just a routine witness statement.
The judge acted decisively and ordered both the glasses and the smartphone to be seized. However, the witness stood by his account and denied having used either.
On the next day of the trial, he appeared again wearing glasses. Despite the incidents, he stuck to his story. Even when phone records showed numerous incoming calls during his testimony, he repeatedly claimed he could not remember anything.
Questionable statement draws criticism
It became particularly confusing when the witness gave an explanation that was almost impossible to follow. He claimed to have believed that ChatGPT had caused the voice to be heard coming from his cell phone.
The court did not find this account convincing. As a result, his entire testimony was dismissed.
Technology in the courtroom: Opportunity or risk?
This case illustrates how vulnerable court proceedings can be to technical manipulation. What may seem practical in everyday life can seriously jeopardize the search for the truth in the courtroom. Testimony must be given independently—any external influence is a problem.
At the same time, pressure is mounting on the courts to keep pace with these developments. Technology is evolving faster than many regulations.
In the end, an unpleasant impression remains: the problem isn’t the technology itself, but its misuse. Anyone who thinks they can get help in the courtroom at the push of a button is taking a huge risk—and, if all else fails, stands to lose everything.
