Landed, checked, license gone: How a flight led to the loss of a driver's license

Memmingen Airport - and suddenly your driver's license is gone
Some people bring back a few souvenirs from their vacation. This man left something behind after the flight - his driver's license. The 33-year-old passenger from Skopje was checked by the federal police immediately after his Wizzair flight landed at Memmingen Airport. The officers discovered that the man should have handed in his driver's license long ago - because his license had already been legally revoked.
But instead of handing the document in to the authorities as required, he still had it with him. This apparently went unnoticed until the return journey from North Macedonia - until the border check. As a result, the police immediately confiscated the license and sent it to the relevant driving license office for "safekeeping".
Why the driver's license was wanted
Anyone who loses their driving license must actually hand it in at the driving license office. Simply hiding it in a drawer does not count. If this does not happen, the document will be put out for search - just like a stolen car or a wanted ID card.
This means that as soon as the police have access to the data - for example during a passport check at the airport - the system kicks in. The case shows how closely document tracing is now intertwined with everyday border police work.
Airport checkpoint: no lawless area
Airports have long since ceased to be just a take-off and landing point for travelers - they are also a hotspot for digital police work. This is because anyone arriving from abroad automatically undergoes systematic checks. And this regularly brings to light things that would have remained hidden for a long time on home soil - outstanding arrest warrants, outstanding fines or even: driving licenses that have not been handed in.
The man on the Wizzair flight had obviously hoped that his driver's license would not be noticed in his luggage. But in the digital age, forgetting or ignoring it won't get you far. The check at Allgäu Airport was the end of the story - at least for his driver's license.
If you fly, you should fly clean
It's absurd: some people know exactly what liquids they are allowed to carry in their hand luggage - but forget that their driving license is no longer valid. It gets really embarrassing - and expensive - at the latest when their license is wanted.
The fact is that a revoked document does not remain a secret just because you are not driving. Authorities today are digitally networked, airports are high-security zones - anyone who enters with an open process need not be surprised at the consequences.
A driver's license is not a memento that you can simply keep. If you have to hand it in and fail to do so, you will not only be kicked off the plane - but also off the driving license register.
