Currywurst paid for with counterfeit money - now it's getting really expensive!

A stupid idea with real consequences
A 16-year-old orders play money on the internet - deceptively real 50 euro bills. The providers make it clear that this is not real money. But the teenager is curious: could it still work?
He dares to try it at a snack bar. A currywurst, a fake fifty - and the scam is discovered immediately. The sales clerk recognizes the scam, becomes suspicious and calls the police. The 16-year-old is caught, and a seemingly harmless test turns into a serious matter.
House search uncovers 22,000 euros in counterfeit money
The police take the incident seriously and search the teenager's home. There, the officers make a surprising discovery: over 22,000 euros in fake banknotes! A huge pile of play money that looks amazingly real at first glance.
But that's not all: the teenager even films himself during the action and posts the videos on the internet. Presumably intended as a fun challenge or test of courage, the footage becomes a valuable source of evidence for the investigators. He provides them with the decisive clues himself, so to speak.
The verdict: community service instead of prison
The case ends up before the Düsseldorf district court. The charge: "Putting counterfeit money into circulation in conjunction with fraud." Sounds complicated, but it means that anyone who knowingly puts counterfeit money into circulation is liable to prosecution - even if the attempt fails.
The court sentences the young person to 30 hours of community service. Compared to possible penalties for adults, this is a mild sanction. Why? Because juvenile criminal law focuses on education rather than punishment. If he had been an adult, he could have faced a fine or even a prison sentence.
Counterfeit money is not a harmless prank!
This case shows that counterfeit money is not a toy. Even if it is sold as "fun money", even the attempt to use it can have serious consequences. The authorities are no joke in such cases - investigations, house searches and court proceedings are imminent.
The 16-year-old was lucky: no criminal record, but plenty of trouble. The case makes it clear how quickly a stupid idea can have serious consequences. And in the end, the question remains: was the currywurst really worth it? Hardly.
