What is behind the ban on Lisa Poettinger's profession?

In February 2025, Lisa Poettinger, a committed climate activist, was due to start her traineeship at a Bavarian school - but the Ministry of Education has denied her this step for the time being. Officially, she was rejected due to "doubts about her loyalty to the constitution". However, what lies behind this decision and what it means for her professional future is not quite so clear.

The Ministry of Culture decides on Poettinger's future

Poettinger, who describes herself as a Marxist and fights for climate protection, wanted to work as a secondary school teacher in Bavaria after successfully completing her first state examination. However, the ministry classified her as belonging to the left-wing extremist spectrum and declared that she would not be admitted to the traineeship. For Poettinger, this is a professional ban. She made the rejection public on social networks and sharply criticized the decision. Her reasoning? She was campaigning for climate protection - not for illegal activities or against the constitution.

The ministry argues that teachers, who work with young people on a daily basis, bear a great deal of responsibility and must therefore commit to the free and democratic basic order. Doubts about their loyalty to the constitution led to the decision.

The political dimension: a fight for freedom of expression?

The Poettinger case has triggered a heated debate. Her supporters see the rejection as intimidation of politically active people who are committed to climate protection or other social issues. For them, the case is clear: Poettinger is being punished for her political convictions.

Poettinger herself firmly rejects the accusations. In her opinion, it is not about the constitutional commitment, but about the rejection of her political stance. She criticizes the Bavarian state government's policy as undemocratic and now wants to take legal action against the decision. "It is unacceptable that people are excluded from public service because of their convictions," says Poettinger.

What does that say about freedom of expression?

The case touches on the issue of freedom of expression and the right to engage in political activism. In a democratic state, everyone should be free to fight for a cause - be it climate protection or against social injustice. But when the state decides that these views call into question the suitability for a public service such as the teaching profession, a boundary between political freedom and state control becomes visible.

The fine line between loyalty to the constitution and political freedom of opinion

From a legal point of view, the Ministry of Education's decision may seem justified if it is based on the need for teachers to demonstrate a positive attitude towards the constitution. But if we are honest: This reasoning could have far-reaching consequences. Who decides which political views are "loyal to the constitution"? Will the state intervene even further in the political opinion-forming of its citizens in the future?

Poettinger is fighting for her rights, and that is her right. When the state begins to use political engagement as a reason to ban people from their profession, we cast a dangerous shadow over freedom of expression. In a democracy, we must constantly ask ourselves how much influence the state is allowed to have on our personal beliefs and professional careers.
