Scaremongering via chain letter: What's behind it?
Maybe you've already received it: A dramatic WhatsApp message warning you that AI systems will soon be able to read all your chats - and your phone numbers too. Supposedly, this can only be prevented if you activate "enhanced chat privacy immediately". Sounds serious? But it's complete nonsense.
This chain message is currently circulating en masse - and it has only one aim: to spread fear. But the truth is much more harmless - and clearly documented.
How secure are WhatsApp chats really?
First of all, the most important all-clear: WhatsApp chats are end-to-end encrypted by default. In concrete terms, this means that only you and the person you are chatting to can read what is written. Neither Meta nor any AI can access your content just like that - not even with any secret "loopholes".
And what about Meta AI, WhatsApp's new AI function? Yes, it does exist. But it only works if you consciously activate it - e.g. by writing "@Meta AI" in the chat or if you specifically start an AI chat. Then it is precisely this content that is analyzed, not your entire WhatsApp history.
What can "extended data protection" really do?
The setting mentioned in the chain letter actually exists - it's called "Advanced Chat Privacy". However, it does not protect you from invented AI spying, but offers a few practical additional functions:
- Your chat partner cannot activate Meta AI in this conversation.
- Photos and videos are not automatically saved in your gallery.
- The chat history cannot be exported.
In short: it's a sensible setting, but not absolutely necessary. It gives you more control - but not because you will otherwise be spied on by artificial intelligence.
Targeted misinformation
Such chain letters are no joke - they spread false information and unsettle millions of people. Particularly perfidious: they use the fear of AI to undermine trust in secure systems such as WhatsApp.
No, Meta does not read your chats. No, an AI is not secretly snooping on your contacts. And no, you don't have to press any "privacy button" in a panic.
